International law is the set of rules that apply between countries, also known as public international law. It can be derived from a variety of sources, including international agreements, decisions made by international organizations, international customs, and general principles of law. International agreements are treaties, conventions, and other written agreements among countries. International organizations are established by treaties and their decisions, such as those of the UN Security Council, can be considered sources of international law. International customs include practices that have become customary international law through repetition and acceptance by a majority of states. Finally, general principles of law can be accepted by countries as part of international law, such as the prohibition of torture.
